Does website design impact your customers’ perception and trust of your business?

Sometimes it can feel like I’m preaching “from the Hilltop”, but I can’t stress it enough: good website design has incredible impact on your current and future customer’s perception of and trust-level with your business.

I recently was scouring the internet for an obscure collectible I wanted to gift my mother (Department 56, anyone?). After hours – maybe even days – of searching online, I finally found one company that sold what I was looking for!

Then I saw their website.

The company’s logo seemed stretched and pixelated. The website buttons were oversized, and the layout felt old-fashioned. I scrolled to find contact information; I couldn’t. It didn’t seem like there was any reliable information about this company at all. This wasn’t a website I felt comfortable putting my personal information in. I feared supplying my credit card details. So, I didn’t end up buying the collectible for my mom.

And it’s a shame! Months later I did a little more research to find out more about this company. It turned out to be a legitimate small business. The product was genuine. I could’ve bought the collectible I was in search of, and that business could’ve made a valuable sale.

So, I think I will preach “from the Hilltop” – this is Hilltop Marketing, after all!

Say it with me:

“A good website design is vital to my customers’ perception and trust of my business.”

A professionally designed website let’s your customers know you’re legitimate. Your business, however large or small, is going to be competing in a crowded digital marketplace. You need to stand out for your business to succeed. As I’ve said before: thecompany with a professionally designed website is usually the one that wins the business.

So, how does a good website design impact your customers’ perception and trust of your business? I’m glad you asked! Because:

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Just ask the man who sells those Department 56 figurines I’ll probably never see. Your website creates an immediate first impression of your business, and it better be a good one. In a digital-first world, your customer is more than likely to encounter you online before they ever interact with you in-person. It’s your first opportunity to present yourself! A clean, modern website design puts your company’s best foot forward with your customers. It shows you’re credible, professional, and trustworthy.

This may be your customers’ only opportunity to interact with you.

That’s why it’s important that your website’s design reinforces your brand and your physical presence. You don’t need to have wild graphics or special effects to wow potential customers or to be considered professional. Emphasis on a simple layout, easy navigation, and colors that reinforce your logo and brand are what’s key.

You make it easy for your customers to connect.

Great design and navigation aside, your customers may still want to verify your business. That can be through accurate contact information like your address, phone number, and e-mail. Or, through verified social media accounts linked to your page. The more methods you make available for your customers to contact you, the more your business appears approachable, reachable, and legitimate. Plus, if you’re prominently featuring your contact information on your website and providing excellent customer support through these various channels, you’re reassuring your customers that they will be taken care of, which increases trust in your business.

You show that other people trust your business.

Featuring a testimonial or two (or three or four) lets potential customers know that other individuals have enjoyed and appreciated the services you have to offer. Don’t be afraid to ask for a review or comment from current customers. If they enjoy your business, they’ll likely be happy to share their story with you. Request their permission to use that testimonial to promote your company to others. It’ll enhance your credibility and assure future customers about the quality and reliability of your company and the services you provide.

The bottom line…

A well-designed website will help maintain your current customer base while attracting new customers to your business. It helps to establish your credibility, legitimacy, and professionalism. It reinforces the trust they’ve decided to place in your company, and it turns them into brand advocates for your business.

What happens next?

Will I return to that small business’ website and buy the Department 56 collectible? Or will I let the suspect website prevent me from making a purchase I’ve long been in search of? Time will tell! I may just have to offer up some of Hilltop Marketing’s services instead.

It’s time for your business to tell your story with a website you can be proud of.
